Elizabeth began studying pottery at the Baylor School,
Chattanooga, TN in 1996 under the renowned potter William Sinclair Ashley and Mary Lynne Portera. She then went to collage
at Western State, CO and studied under art director Allen Canniff , the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga under Maggie
McMahon and interned with local potter Jeff Rogers.
Elizabeth began her career as a potter in 2002 when she created her own line of functional work and sold to galleries,
on the Internet , in art shows and at a local open air Market. In 2003 she joined a cooperative gallery where her work was
featured in individual shows. At this time she also began offering classes for people interested in sharing in the joy of
creating. Her classes grew in popularity and by 2005 she had taught over 30 different students, 6 of whom had started their
own studios and are making their own line of functional work now .
Elizabeth traveled to Haiti for the first time
in 2006 for a short 10 day trip that stirred her desire for travel and her deep love and appreciation of culture. She then
revisited Haiti for a more in-depth exploration of 5 months where she visited pottery villages in the community of Opan,
Haiti. She stayed with these people learning of their work and firing methods and how the clay had impacted their lives.
She says, "In return my life was greatly impacted and i am sure that this trip will not be my last to this and many other
secluded developing country art villages." Elizabeth also visited many other artisans in Haiti, and was offered a job by the
Haitian Government to work with artisans to more further develop their skills. " I have a real passion for the work and an
even larger passion for the artists."
